Eric Anderson providing project management services for “Passive House” sustainable design project

Eric Anderson, AIA is currently serving as Owner’s Representative providing project management services for a non-profit organization, Friends of Refugees in Clarkston, Georgia.  Clarkston has the unique circumstance of being a small community with the highest concentration of Asian refugees of any place in the US.  Friends of Refugees is designing and building a 17,000 square foot refugee development center, a facility to help this special community become employed in the local economy, learn English as a second language, navigate local education and other social support systems.

The refugee development center is planned to be a near-net-zero project using the “Passive House” sustainable design criteria, a rigorous program focusing on a super insulated, tight building envelope allowing reduced energy for heating and cooling.  The project will benefit greatly from donated and discounted equipment, materials and services that will include photovoltaic panels, the use of stored DC power, and a VFR mechanical system with energy recovery ventilation.

An important part of the refugee community social system is community gardening; 94 plots are already in place on the project site.  Storm water is, and will continue to be collected and used on site for garden irrigation.  When completed, the Center will be the largest commercial project certified under the Passive House design and construction criteria.
